LEAGUE RULES

A FEW WORDS ABOUT RULES

We seek to provide the highest quality of adult basketball league play and fair competition possible. We are aware that officiating (or lack thereof) has much to do with a player’s in-game experience. That said, please arrive knowing that no official is perfect and that they are often faced with a difficult task that often leaves an individual, a team or both teams dissatisfied. Our instructions to the officials we contract with are simple:

  1. Call a tight game. Establish foul calls early and set a tone that penalizes rough or out of control play.
  2. Call a fair game. Regardless of the time on the clock, complaints from players or otherwise, make sure both teams receive equal treatment.
  3. Call any intentional fouls swiftly. Often, teams are down late in games and need to foul to stop the clock. We DO NOT want players swinging wildly or endangering the health of other players by fouling late in games. Our officials will do their best to recognize that a team is trying to foul and may call the close or questionable ones just to ensure safety on the court. To be safe, tell the officials you plan to foul intentionally.

Outside of the list below, all Oregon Basketball League games follow the National Federation of High Schools Rules. Download them here. You may love to watch the NBA, but there is no continuation on foul calls, your team won’t be able to inbound from 1/2 court on a timeout and any number of differences you are welcome to research.

We place great emphasis on safe, clean play and often have families and children near the courts. For that reason, there is a considerable penalty for technical fouls and we ask officials to give a warning for cursing on the court. If the cursing continues from any player on the court or bench area, regardless of who or whom it is directed to, the offending team will be assessed a technical foul. If you feel that trash talk, openly criticizing officials, “cheap” play, menacing or threatening opposing players is a part of your game and/or the only way you can get fired up or excited, the Oregon Basketball League might not be the league for you.
